Hey guys. Guess who's back! It has definitely been a while since I wrote and there's no better time to come back. If you've yet to know (unless you're a Malaysian and you don't know this, I don't know what to say), Malaysia is currently under a Movement Control Order due to the Covid-19 outbreak. It was initially just for 14 days, and it recently got extended for another 2 weeks. Which means, we are all just gonna be stuck at home and most of us are already going a bit nuts with the boredom that we've been facing daily.

As for me, my company has been working from home since almost 2 weeks ago. It's not THAT common for us here to get to work from home on a regular basis, so we were all definitely excited initially about this new arrangement. For all of us who have been wishing to work from home finally got a full taste of how it would be like! And for once in 2.5 years I'm actually utilising the desk in my room for proper work and not storage purposes 😅

While I was taking a break from work one day, it just came into my mind that it would be fun to write about this! So, here's a POV from a girl who finally got to experience what it's like working from home and the best things about it!

Sniff your 'bantal busuk' the WHOLE DAY

Who here looks forward going home to smell your smelly pillow after a long day at work? 🙋🏻‍♀️ Not going to deny that I'm one of them! #shameless 🙈 One thing I've been enjoying the most is getting to sniff it anytime I want all day, everyday - especially while working. Oh Lord! I can't explain the privilege to be able to sniff it while working. People need coffee to hurdle on but me? I just need one (or more than one) whiff of it 🤤 And I'm pretty certain I'm not the only one enjoying this, but I may be enjoying it a little too much 🌚

Take that post-lunch power nap

Don't we all struggle everyday trying to stay awake post-lunch when we're in office? - especially after a great dose of Nasi Lemak! 😴 Now that we're all working from home, there's no need to fight it anymore. Temporarily at least. Do remember to set your alarm to wake up in 20 minutes or else you'll be playing a game called nap roulette 🌚 But I guess as long as you get your job done and deliver it on time eh?

Poop in peace

Don't we all feel a little insecure about doing a number 2 when we're outside? 👀 - especially when you're at work! 🙃 Well, I'm pretty sure we have all been anxious-free about it the past 2 weeks. I can't explain the joy of being able to go any time and not needing to worry about having spicy food for lunch! 🤤

Pyjamas party all day

I can't remember the last time I ran out of home-clothes to wear 😱 and it's such a rare sight to see my working clothes section untouched in my wardrobe!  Okay, I work in a place that doesn't actually require a corporate attire but I still have some clothes picked out just for work. And for those of you who works in corporate, it must have been super life changing! So, do you guys actually prefer to be working in your work clothes or home clothes? 🤨

See your colleague's true self

If only I'm a quarter as cute 🙃

There's no better opportunity to see your colleagues' 'true self' during your morning team conference call. This is probably your only chance to see them before their morning rituals of waxing hair and slapping on makeup (no eyebrows!) 😱 And unfortunately, I'm one of them 🙃 My face is super puffy in the morning and my RBF in the morning is somehow 10x enhanced. It's pretty easy to spot a just-woke-up Mel 🌚

Home cooked lunch

"Today eat what?" "What do you wanna eat?" "Where do you wanna eat?" Aren't these questions all too familiar? 🙄 It's been 2 weeks since I broke my streak of eating mixed rice for lunch that's just across my office (and also because it's cheap)! Feels good to have a change of lunch-routine with some home cooked lunch except that after the 3rd day of MCO, I started getting so lazy to cook anything! 😅 Kinda miss having mixed rice tho!

Save petrol money

I honestly don't remember the last time I went to get gas! Heck, I did not even start my car for 10 days straight until I needed to head out to get groceries. 😱 It's been kinda nice to see my money stay in my bank account - and it's not just for gas but for anything at all because there's just nothing to pay for except for groceries (or online shopping which I'm so proud that I didn't cave!. Yet.) 🌚

So, there you have it guys! A super random piece to revive my blog 🤣 Hope you guys had fun reading (or maybe I may have just exposed my lameness to the world) 🌚. Kbye.

Sincerely, Mels

Days before graduation, I was so anxious and nervous about so many things - what if my heels hurt, what if I trip on stage, what if my hair looks ugly with the mortar board on, what if I don't look nice in my graduation robe, and many more what ifs were running through my head. But as I look back now, I felt a little silly to be worrying so much! My face may look a little rounder than usual and that I was sweating buckets beneath the mortar board and graduation robe, but that was the entire highlight of the day and probably the only chance I will get to wear them in life - if I do not pursue for Masters that is. None of my worries mattered that day as my focus was automatically shifted to the main reason that I was in Taylor's that day - to celebrate my achievements.

My girlfriends and I were messaging each other on the way to campus on where to meet and reminding each other on what to bring, etc. It had also been a while since we last saw each other and when we did, it just felt like old times again especially with all of us being in campus.

Next to me is Nabila from Indonesia. During the first semester, we were pretty close together with Ellina, Revathy and also Lika. However our friendship grew a little more apart as the semesters pass but we were always in the same classes as we were both pursuing the same majors, and she's also my all time exam partner when it comes to seating as her name falls after mine. Even during graduation, we were arranged to sit according to alphabetical order!

Moments before it was my turn to be on stage, I had so much butterflies in my stomach. As I observe my friends receiving their awards before my turn, I can't help but to feel so proud and happy for them. When it came to my turn, I reminded myself that I worked hard the last 3 years to be here on this very day! It's my time to enjoy that few seconds on stage because it's now or never.

When my turn was over, I was so looking forward to seeing Ivan after the ceremony. He plays a huge role in helping me to cope with work, my new life routine and kept giving me words of reassurance that all will be well for graduation. Even the night before, he literally stood in front of me for 5 minutes reassuring me everything will be okay, and told me to enjoy it.

Quoting him, he said "you will be fine, you're the most prepared one among everyone else! You got to rent your robe earlier, had a trial run wearing the robe and mortar board, practiced with your heels, you're all set! I'll be there tomorrow to help you take as many shots you want for Instagram, I don't mind being there until 7pm, I'll be there to help you carry your things and help you with anything you need. I am very proud and happy for you."

The moment I exited the hall, he was the first that I saw, holding a huge bouquet of roses with a wide smile on his face. An expression which shows so obviously on how happy and proud he is of me.

We then proceeded to look for my family members who were elsewhere in campus. Also, it started to rain very heavily when the ceremony ended. The situation was pretty chaotic as everyone was cramped up under the shaded area.

Many thanks to my family and relatives who came from near and far - Gerik, Ipoh, KL, Johor. Thank you for making the effort to celebrate this special day with me, and not forgetting all the flowers and ang paus I received too!

Mum and Dad, thank you for believing in me enough to fund me through 3 years in Taylor's.

To me, it felt like they took a chance if not risk in 'investing' into my education. My SPM and Foundation results showed no sign that I will excel well in my tertiary studies but irregardless of that, they have always reminded me that it is their wish to provide both their daughters the best education in our respective fields. I once told my mum this when I first got enrolled into Taylor's, "never in my wildest dreams I have thought that I will be given such privilege to study in a private university". This Bachelors Degree is dedicated to the both of you.

Sis, thank you for your constant guide from afar and being my role model throughout.

She has always been the brains in the family and since young, I have only wish to achieve what she has achieve. But I never had the discipline she has when it comes to studies. As I grew older, I understand the importance of education or a Bachelors Degree to 'survive' and have always wanted to be as successful as she is.

Jessica, Sabrina, May and also Melanie, thank you for being the #dreamteam in the second half of our university years, and a special friendship that I will cherish always.

When I first entered Taylor's, I was just an average student. I never really put much thought in pushing myself beyond my limits and comfort zone to achieve more and better things, until I met them. I wouldn't say it was a competition when it came to results, but seeing their ability in achieving outstanding results in exams and coursework makes me question myself if I am putting my 101% percent into studies. Motivation from them along as maturity over the years, that's when I started to grow and be better than I was. Thank you for everything girls.

The partial Friendship Forever gang. We may not be as close as how we used to be anymore, but thank you for making the effort to attend my graduation all the way from Nilai! It was nice seeing you guys despite I went MIA most of the time.

Mr Winston, the only lecturer whom I am close with in Taylor's. Thank you for your guidance and words of encouragements throughout the final 2 semesters in uni.

To all my other friends, CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU GUYS!

Hunting for friends on graduation day is like looking for a needle in a haystack! I didn't manage to take photos with each and everyone of you but it was nice seeing you guys again. All the best to all of you, and do keep in touch!

Extracted from Instagram, a dedication to my late Grandmother:

"In the past 23 years of my life, I have missed out many opportunities. None of it made me feel as down as knowing I never made it up to ‘the wall of fame’ in my late grandma’s house - 2 walls in her house were dedicated for graduation photos of her children and grandchildren. The next in line was mine, but she left a little too soon when I was completing my final year project, and 4 days before my very final university exam. It breaks me knowing she never saw me in my graduation robe or when I’m up on stage receiving my award.

In my previous post I mentioned Adeline is my role model in many things. When she graduated, my grandma was a part of the occasion as well as the official photos. As happy as I am about my graduation, I can’t help but to feel something is missing and it’s something I’ll never have which is to have my grandma with me on this special day.
.
I hope you were with us on Saturday, and you’re missed dearly."

I hope I have made you proud Ah Mah.

Special thanks to Adeline for being my awesome awesome photographer and videographer for the day! Her being stuck with me for a month in Europe last year has taught her well!

Also thanks to this one here for being my human hanger that day. If only I took a photo of him carrying all my things with 2 cameras slung on him! I hope you had as much fun as I did, and also meeting my extended family!

Officially signing off student life 🎓

This post is 11 days overdue (duh... what's new), but better late than never. So, here it goes...

INTERNSHIP

2017 for me started with an internship with Samsung Electronics Malaysia. Before accepting the offer, I was in a dilemma as I had 3 offers pending. I was anxious yet excited to working for a large corporation like Samsung but I knew it was the best choice for my future. With the support from my family, I accepted the offer and it was such a priceless opportunity. I learnt and grew so much as an individual from just 3 months working with them, and it was such an obvious personal advancement that my lecturer even took time to give his compliments and feedbacks.

As for work, I learnt and gain so much - the experience of working for an international corporation. Being a shy and timid person, I had to 'grow some balls' to get my work done because my tasks involved engaging with people within and outside the organization. I have heard so much about how interns aren't capable enough, and being an intern then made me felt so self conscious. I constantly try to avoid mistakes because I do not wish to be frown upon on. That thought changed when my superior sent me out of office to conduct a few trainings on my own. It's incidents like this that has helped in reassuring myself that I was doing okay.

GRADUATION

Taylor's University

The second quarter of 2017 was basically surviving final semester of my Bachelors Degree program. In short, it was a whirlwind for all of us juggling between assignments and university projects, and some of us juggling between studies and work. Sleep was almost not in our vocabulary and our stress level was over the roof but all of that paid off really well. My team got chosen as the winning proposal team, and most of our assignments were of flying colours! Most importantly, I am glad we found each other - a team that brings each other up, and a friendship to last a lifetime. We sat for our last paper on the 22nd of July, and before we know it, 3 years was done.

WINTER - PERTH, AUSTRALIA

Elizabeth Quay, Perth, Australia

In August, Belle and I finally went on our first vacation together - Perth! It was also my very first vacation overseas with a friend and I am glad I had Belle with me. Previously, we tried to plan on other destinations but it never worked out due to time and resources constrains. We spent a total of 5 days there and it all ended way too soon! Our days there were cold and rainy, but it was a good trip as Perth isn't a hectic city. We both got the relaxation that we needed, and sipped on countless of hot chocolate. Do check out my previous blog posts for accommodation, itinerary, write ups, visuals and vlogs!

AUTUMN - UNITED KINGDOM & EUROPE

I swear I had such a difficult time trying to pick one best photo for each city!

Over September - October, my family and I had our ultimate family trip cum graduation trip! This was a trip that was planned since almost a year ago and it was by far the toughest trip to plan. We were fortunate to have my sister planning most of the itinerary as she had a fair share of experience in UK prior to this. I thought I loved planning itineraries, until this! Everything was so complicated - familiarizing public transport routes, booking of domestic and international flights with airlines that we have never been on before, the currency difference, etc. Also, not forgetting all the unforeseen incidents that we had to come up with spontaneous Plan Bs! But it was an amazing trip and the best graduation present that I could ever ask for. I really never thought I could visit Santorini this soon, and it could not have happened if it weren't for my parents. Will do a more detailed write up on this soon!

Tower Bridge, London, United Kingdom

Fira, Santorini, Greece

Nyhavn, Copenhagen, Denmark

Alster Lake, Hamburg, Germany

Rhein Fall, Zurich, Switzerland

Eiffel Tower, Paris, France

Stonehenge, Salisbury, UK

UWE, Bristol, UK

Pulteney Bridge, Bath, UK

Primark, Manchester, UK

SUMMER - PHUKET, THAILAND

One of the craziest thing I had done in 2017 would be this - flying to Thailand the very next day after landing from Europe the previous night. I thought I will experience really bad jet lag but to my surprise I coped really well! This was a vacation with my university buddies - Jessica & Sabrina, although I wish all 5 of us could have made it! We spent a total of 4 days with 2 full days packed with island hoping tours. I don't remember when was the last time I had a beach vacation prior to this and it definitely felt good after a long cold vacation!

BUILDING A NEW LIFE

After graduating from Taylor's, I was contemplating whether to begin my adulthood in Ipoh or KL. At that time, KL was a place of sorrow for me and all I wanted to do was to stay in Ipoh, be near to my family. Technically, I did move all of my things from my previous apartment back to Ipoh for a few months while I did all my traveling. My plans after graduation was rather stagnant and I didn't know how to go from there. On one hand, I wanted to enjoy my travels entirely before getting worked up about what was going to happen after that, but on the other, it bugged me so much not knowing what's happening after that or even where will I be. Until, I got a text from a company while I was in Perth, and I was employed after returning from my Europe and Phuket trip.

EMPLOYMENT

Although the duration of working with this company - which I would like to keep it confidential - was a short term and temporary one, it was still a blessing for me as it kept me on track and it gave me a direction to start over after graduation. The people I've met in the company are caring and it's not just on a business level. It was a great little experience working for a startup but I later on decided that I had to move on to something I am more passionate about; or at least something more of my interest / relatable, to first build my career foundation.

FIRST CLASS HONOURS

After months of waiting, and countless of emails sent to the university, the official results were released in November. It was a nerve wrecking moment and I still remember the longest walk I had from the carpark to the office; took a number and waited for my turn, which also felt like forever when I was already the next in line; walked up to the counter to be asked for my particulars and it felt like they took soooooo long to look for my transcript. I was so anxious but when I finally saw my final CGPA, I was holding myself back from crying tears of joy in front of everyone. Studies were never my forte, and getting such achievement is more than I can ever imagine myself achieving. Hard work do pay off and most importantly, the willingness in yourself to achieve the best you can. At that very moment, for the very first time, I was proud of myself and I was genuinely happy on my own because it was something I did for and achieved for myself and on my own (with also help from group mates of course).

FIRST CONCERT

I never really had a favourite artist or whatsoever. I always listen to the songs more than who sings them and that's when I heard Perfect by Ed Sheeran and feel in love with it. When it was first announced about this concert in KL, Sabrina and I tried our best to get the tickets but to no avail. Until, the day before his concert, Sabrina found a reseller and we were really contemplating if we should and we had to decide quick. The picture says it all that yes we did get the tickets and that was my very first concert that I attended!

MEETING IVAN

Receiving such colourful results calls for a celebration - and that's how I met Ivan. That very same night, my friends were planning on getting drinks and going out at night - not something that I would do at all back then. But that night, I just needed to get out, and had the urge to begin socializing. And we were both introduced to each other by a mutual friend. Who would have thought that the breakfast date on the very next day would lead to where we are right now. On new years eve, we spent it in a bar where we were suppose to meet for the very first time but I was busy with work. We both got to witness a spectacular fireworks display just outside the bar, and be in each other's arm welcoming 2018. Here's to more celebrations together, and having and appreciating each other in life. Here's to a new journey for the both of us.

Here's to a happier journey in life.

Sincerely, Mels
